How it all began
I founded Gaia Conceptions in 2003 to share the organic, naturally dyed clothing that brought me so much joy to make and wear — not just aesthetically, but in how it felt on my skin, in my body, in my nervous system.
I didn't set out to build a business. I set out to solve a problem I was living with: everything I put on my body felt wrong. The fabrics were synthetic. The dyes were chemical. The fit was standardized for a body that wasn't mine. It wasn't in alignment with the ethical and health choices I was making in all other areas of my life. And the faster fashion moved, the more disconnected it felt to my rhythm.
So I learned to make my own clothes.
I studied pattern-making, draping, and fitting. I sourced organic fabrics. I taught myself how to work with natural dyes — indigo, madder, pomegranate, marigold — learning which plants were reliable, which methods actually worked, and how to troubleshoot when things went sideways (which they often did).
What started as a personal practice became a collection of garments for women who wanted the same thing I did: clothing made with organic fabrics, artisan integrity, dyed with plants, designed to work with real bodies instead of idealized ones.

GAIA CONCEPTIONS WAS BORN
Through the Gaia Atelier I have devoted 20+ years to creating bespoke organic garments that feel like skin care combined with customization options that support self care.
Every piece is:
Customizable — choose your sleeve length, silhouette, fabric weight, and dye color - Hand-dyed using natural plant dyes (indigo, madder, pomegranate, marigold, cochineal, and more) - Sewn from your organic fabric choice - soft and comfortable with a beautiful drape - Designed to last — not for a season, but for years.
I don't make fast fashion. I make slow clothing. The kind that gets better with wear, that develops its own patina, that you repair instead of replace.
If you're looking for something you can't find anywhere else — a garment designed to fit real bodies, dyed a color you can't buy off a rack, made with materials that won't off-gas into your bloodstream, made in a studio that respects it's artist — this is the work we do at Gaia Conceptions.

Over time, it became clear that what I was really doing wasn't just making garments. I was reclaiming a relationship with the materials themselves — the fabric, the dye, the process. A relationship that industrial production had severed.

What I Believe
I believe that what touches your skin matters.
Not just environmentally (though that is essential), but personally — for your nervous system, your vitality, your sense of being at home in your own body.
Organic fabric breathes differently than synthetic. It moves with you instead of against you. Natural dyes carry properties — cooling, anti-inflammatory, grounding — that your skin recognizes, even if your mind doesn't name it.
This isn't new-age thinking. It's ancient wisdom. In Ayurvedic tradition, clothing dyed with plants was understood as Ayurvastra — life-health garments — designed to support the body's balance and well-being. Turmeric for inflammation. Indigo for cooling. Madder for circulation. The medicine was in the cloth itself.
When I dye fabric now, I'm not just creating color. I'm working with that same intelligence — the intelligence the plants carry, and the intelligence our ancestors knew how to access.
What I've Learned
After 20 years of making thousands of garments, testing every natural dye I could get my hands on, and designing silhouettes for different bodies and proportions, here's what I know for certain:
You can't control nature. You can only work with it.
The organic fabric refuses the pattern you drafted — until you let it show you a different way. The indigo presents an unexpected blue, making predictable color impossible. The formula that worked last month shifts with this month's batch of roots. And in that refusal, that surprise, that shift — something in you changes too. You stop trying to dominate the process. You start listening to it instead.
This is what I teach now. Not perfection. Not control. But partnership — with the fabric, with the plants, with the process itself.
What I Teach
A few years ago, I realized that the women coming to me for naturally dyed garments didn't just want the finished piece. They wanted to know how to make it themselves.
So I started building Gaia Tinctoria to share what I've learned.
Not in a casual, "here's a quick tutorial" way — but in the way I wish someone had taught me when I started: with simple capsule wardrobe patterns, clear instruction, time tested natural dye recipes, a community, and the kind of depth that only comes from doing something for 20 years and making every mistake there is to make.
That wish became Gaia Tinctoria — an online school where I share everything I know about making naturally dyed organic clothing.
Inside the Guild, you'll find:
everything you need to make your own naturally dyed organic garments — all in one place. The Guild currently includes over 30,000 garment possibilities, with more added over time as it grows. We already have over 2 million garment and natural dye combos in the pipeline for release over the next 5 years!!! You can choose between monthly, yearly, or lifetime access!
Simple enough for a confident beginner and fecund enough to offer advanced sewers and dyers a wide range of possibilities!!

This isn't a course you take once and move on from. It's a practice you return to — as your skills deepen, as your questions evolve, as you make more garments and encounter new challenges.

Why I Do This Work
As the world keeps speeding up, I've found that making grounds my nervous system in the same way a long walk in the woods does.
The rhythm of the sewing machine becomes meditation. The challenge of mistakes becomes an opportunity to love myself and try again. The smell and feel of natural dyes becomes a reunion with my ancestors and with the earth herself.
And the joy of saying "thank you, I made it" when someone compliments what I'm wearing — that's a feeling of being truly appreciated.
Making these clothes connects me to the ones who came before — the dyers who knew which roots yielded red, the seamstresses who understood that what touches your skin carries medicine.
This knowledge was passed hand to hand, generation to generation, until industrial production nearly erased it.
When you dye fabric with plants, you're reclaiming that lineage. When you sew your own garments, you're remembering what they knew. When you wear what you've made, you're stepping back into right relationship with the materials that clothe you.
This work is medicine — for your body, for your lineage, for the earth.
And it starts with one garment, one dye bath, one choice to work with nature instead of against it.
